Gemini in the Smart Home: What Is Gemini for Home?
Gemini for Home: Google's AI that replaces Google Assistant on Nest speakers. See what it does at home, what's free, and whether it has reached Brazil.

What is Gemini for Home?
Gemini for Home (Gemini para Home, in Portuguese) is Google's new voice assistant for the home, based on Gemini, the company's generative artificial intelligence. It replaces Google Assistant on Google Home and Nest speakers and displays and understands requests in natural language, without you having to memorize the name of each device.
As of October 2026, Gemini for Home had not yet arrived in Brazil or in Portuguese: the countries, the compatible devices, and what's free are in the update at the end of this article. Below is what Google promised when it announced the new assistant, in August 2025.
Google Assistant is a powerful digital assistant that integrates with thousands of systems and devices. It can run scenes, adjust the temperature, open the curtains, adjust the lighting, and much more when integrated with home automation systems.
Like Amazon's assistant, Alexa, it's in millions of homes and is part of people's daily lives.
However, there are limitations, and some of them are quite annoying.
For example, if commands aren't spoken the right way, the assistant comes back with those frustrating answers: "Sorry, I can't help with that" or "I couldn't find a device with that name."
This leads us to a problem: how do you use a voice assistant without having to memorize the names of devices, scenes, or routines?
Another point: when a guest tries to use the commands, probably only the most basic ones will work. But specific commands, like "turn on the living room cove light" or "turn off the balcony LED"? Only the residents (and even then, barely) can use them.
To solve this and other problems, artificial intelligence is the answer.
According to Google, Gemini for Home will launch this October, in 2025, and promises features that will revolutionize the way we interact with our homes:
Help in the kitchen
You'll be able to say, for example: "I have spinach, eggs, cream cheese, and smoked salmon in the fridge. Help me make a delicious meal." Gemini will make personalized suggestions, like eggs Florentine, frittata, and pasta, along with step-by-step instructions.
While cooking, keep talking naturally: "how do I know the pan is hot enough?" or "how do I make sure my eggs don't get too firm?" It's like having a chef by your side!
Research
Explore complex topics and ask questions, like "I'm thinking about buying an electric car..." Or get specific information: "Help me create a meal plan for the week before my first marathon."
The difference? Fluid conversations, without having to rephrase commands.
Troubleshooting
Combined with the power of Google Search, Gemini offers immediate help: "My dishwasher isn't draining properly. Can you walk me through it so I can see if I can fix it myself?"
Forget those confusing manuals: now you have a virtual technician!
Creativity
Generative AI capabilities turn Gemini into a creative partner: "Let's create a story for my 6-year-old daughter about a scientist who is also a princess and loves strawberries!"
Keep going: "our heroine needs a magical pet. Give me some options."
A truly smart home
Here's the big differentiator: no need to memorize device names!
You'll be able to say:
"Turn on the living room lights" (without worrying whether it's "Living Room Bulb 1" or "Philips Hue Living Room")
"I'd like to watch an action movie, get my house ready" (and it will adjust the lights, sound, and temperature automatically)
"I'm hot" (and it will understand that you want the air conditioning or the fan on)
AI promises to revolutionize image analysis: "let me know if someone stands in front of the gate for more than 30 seconds" or "notify me if I left the kitchen faucet running."
The revolution
The possibilities are many, and they will certainly make using the home much easier. As you know, ease of use is the secret to getting people to actually use technology. And when everyone in the family can use it, that's when the automation project has truly succeeded!
If the smart home market is already hot, the arrival of generative AI will bring a new "boom"!
Are you ready for this revolution?
Update (October 2026): early access to Gemini for Home began in October 2025 in the United States and has since reached 19 other countries, including Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, and much of Europe. Brazil and Portuguese are not yet on Google's list, which says other locations will get access over time. The full version goes to the new Google Home speaker, the Nest Mini (2nd generation), the Nest Audio, the Nest Hub (2nd generation), and the Nest Hub Max; older devices, such as the original Google Home, get most of the features, except Gemini Live. The basic features are free, and some, like Gemini Live, require a Google Home Premium subscription. In Brazil, Amazon got there first: in June 2026, Alexa+, the version of Alexa with generative AI, entered early access in the country.
