How to Prepare Your Home for Automation: Part 1

Checklist for preparing your home for Wi-Fi and Zigbee automation: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, modules, flush-mount boxes and wiring. Part 1 of the series.

How to Prepare Your Home for Automation: Part 1

Preparing a home for automation (and other technologies) is the secret to closing good deals and, of course, to allowing new construction to be automated in the future, even if the client does not want to (or cannot afford to) automate at the time of construction.

In this series, I will give you a CHECKLIST for preparing a home for Wi-Fi and Zigbee automation, with micro modules installed in the switch boxes or in the electrical panel.

WI-FI NETWORK

  • Check that the Wi-Fi network is solid and stable on the 2.4 GHz frequency.

  • Do a site survey with Ubiquiti's WiFiman app to analyze interference.

  • Analyze channels 1, 6 and 11 so there is no channel overlap.

  • Add more APs (access points) if needed.

  • Without a good 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, Wi-Fi automation does not work.

MODULES

  • Write down the number, type and wattage of the bulbs.

  • We always recommend LED; avoid incandescent or fluorescent bulbs.

  • Calculate the total wattage per circuit and compare it with the modules' limit.

  • Make the changes needed to keep the loads within specifications, by splitting circuits or replacing the bulbs with LED.

  • Write down the number of 4x4 and 4x2 boxes.

  • Ask for double-depth 4x4 and 4x2 boxes (made by joining two plastic boxes).

  • Use only plastic boxes, not metal ones: metal blocks the modules' radio signal.

  • Run the hot (phase), the neutral and the switch legs to the boxes. Label each switch leg!

  • If space runs short, the modules can be installed above the drywall ceiling, near the light fixtures.

  • If you prefer, you can install the modules in an electrical panel located near the access point.

  • Check the location of the switched outlets and use double-depth boxes for them too.

  • For switched outlets, use an outlet of a different color so they can be identified.

  • Check where three-way control is needed and plan the necessary wiring.

In part 2, we will look at other important points for properly preparing a home for automation: motorized blinds, sensors, cameras, air conditioning and home theater.
