Smart Switch or Automation Module? How They Compare

This is a question that comes up all the time in workshops, in the students' group and in our support channel.

What is a smart automation module?

An automation module is a small device hidden in the wall box, behind a regular switch, that lets you turn the light on, off or dim it from the app, by voice and through scenes. The wall switch keeps working, now connected to the module.

The most common smart modules are the relay (on and off), the dimmer (adjusts the intensity) and the curtain module (opens and closes the motor), in Wi-Fi or Zigbee, with one or more channels. When there is not enough room in the wall box, the module can also go in the ceiling, near the light fixture. To choose the right module for each circuit, see how to size dimmers and relays.

What is a smart switch?

A smart switch, or automation switch, replaces the wall switch and has the module built in. The buttons control the lights on the spot, and the app, voice and scenes control them remotely.

Smart switch or module: how to choose

The answer depends on a few factors.

The first is design.

Smart switches have a specific design, and by replacing your switches, you are choosing a new design.

If you use modules, you keep your existing switches.

Another point is functionality.

With modules, you can mix relay, curtain and dimmer functions on the same switch.

Smart switches, on the other hand, mostly have only the relay function.

However, through scenes and routines, it is possible to control curtains and dimmers.

Installing a smart switch is easier: it does not require a double-depth wall box.

Modules take up more space, which, in new builds and renovations, is not usually a problem if the preparation is done correctly, as I show in How to make a double-depth box.

Three-way and four-way wiring can be kept with modules.

With smart switches, on the other hand, three-way control has to be set up in the app, preferably over the Zigbee network, which works without depending on internet access.

In both cases, run the neutral wire to the wall box and choose models that use a neutral, which work more reliably, especially with LED bulbs.

When to use each one

  • Choose the smart switch if you want to update the design and the wall box is not double-depth.

  • Choose the module if you want to keep your current switches, mix relay, dimmer and curtain on the same spot, and keep three-way and four-way control through the wiring.

Whatever you choose, buy quality products and follow best practices for electrical installation, Wi-Fi network setup and smart scenes.

I recommend hiring a professional for your project.
